What is the best time of year for family photos?

Can you feel the nights getting a bit colder? The weather is definitely cooling down, leaves and landscapes have changed and those jerseys are getting pulled out of the cupboard again. Welcome to winter!

You might be thinking you’ve missed the opportunity for family photos as summer is in our rearview mirror. But - when is it really the best time of year for photos?

Here are four great reasons why I love family sessions in these cooler months, and why you should consider having a family photo session in winter.

  1. Gorgeous scenery
Wellington region has some of the most stunning natural landscapes, whether it’s beach or bush and (on a good day!) they can be even more breathtaking in autumn and winter. The changing colours and the light adds a magical feel to your photos.

  2. Comfy and cosy feels
Autumn and winter clothing options like jerseys, hats and scarves, will create a warm and cosy style to your family photos.

  3. Lighting!
Do I have to remind you about the light in winter? You feel/see it around 4pm, often the wind will die down, there’s a stillness and the sun drops creating that beautiful soft (and flattering!) light. Photographers will often take advanyage of the gorgeous backlight and long shadows.YUM!
Don’t forget the golden hour, which is earlier and longer in winter, so much more practical for everyone, but especially for younger families.

  4. Yay - less Wind!
Yep, remember we do live in Wellington, and it’s always less windy and rainy over winter as an added bonus.

Now, while winter (and autumn) offer some fantastic opportunities for family photos, spring and summer will also have their own unique advantages ;)

Here are some reasons why you might like to consider having some family photos during those warmer months.

  1. Bright and colourful
Spring and summer are the seasons of vibrant flowers, lush greenery, and blue skies. Making a different feel and gorgeous backdrop for photos. Plus, do I need to say it? It is generally warmer of course, which can help everyone feel more relaxed, and happy.

  2. Longer days
As the days get longer during spring and summer, you have more time to plan your photo shoot around the best lighting conditions. Plus, the extra daylight means you can take advantage of early morning or late evening photo sessions without worrying about time restraints.

  3. Lighter clothing options
On the flip-side, with warmer weather you can wear lighter clothes, and this adds a different style and personality to your photos. If you like bright colours, fun patterns, and airy fabrics, spring and summer might suit you more.

I guess I would say it’s actually never a bad time to head out, have some fun and embrace the chaos that is your family!

The best time of year to have family photos will really depend on your personal preferences and the style of photos you're looking for. But definitely don’t just write off any season! Autumn and winter equals gorgeous scenery, soft flattering lighting, and cosy comfy feels. Spring and summer will be more vibrant with longer days, and lighter clothing options. So, why not organise a winter session one year, and another one in the warmer months the following year!?
